Smoke Hazard Management Solution
Airocle implemented a custom natural ventilation solution using Series C and Series Z louvres to meet smoke hazard management requirements while preserving the heritage sawtooth-roof design of the facility. Through detailed CFD analysis, the system was engineered to effectively evacuate smoke in the event of fire, providing compliant, passive protection without compromising the building’s historic character.

KEY OUTCOMES
Project Highlights
Passive Smoke Management
Fire Safety Without Power
Engineered through detailed CFD analysis, the system safely evacuates smoke in the event of fire using natural airflow only, ensuring compliant protection with zero energy demand.
Infrastructure-Grade Reliability
Built for Transport Facilities
Designed for continuous operation in a public transport environment, the system delivers long-term performance, durability and compliance for critical rail infrastructure.
Heritage-Integrated Design
Modern Performance, Preserved Character
The ventilation solution was carefully designed to integrate within the site’s heritage sawtooth roof, delivering modern smoke management without altering the building’s architectural identity.
The Challenge:
At Airocle, we’re always up for a challenge, but when we were approached to provide a smoke hazard management solution for the Parramatta Light Rail, we knew this would require a bit more finesse. The project involved a building being rebuilt while retaining its historic sawtooth roof, an iconic feature that posed a unique challenge.
The key obstacle? The National Construction Code (NCC) standard for smoke hazard management required effective smoke control, but traditional roof ventilation options were no longer viable due to the building’s heritage status.
Our Solution:
We took a systematic approach to identify the best way to address the smoke hazard management requirements while respecting the building’s heritage. After conducting a detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (360 CFD) report, we were able to pinpoint the most effective design to eliminate smoke from the building.
Our team then installed custom-designed louvres on the sawtooth roof. These louvres met all the necessary standards, ensuring both compliance with safety regulations and preserving the building’s historic character. The end result was a seamless integration of modern smoke management technology through our Series C and Series Z Louvres, with the unique architectural features of the building.
A Seamless Blend of Heritage and Innovation
At Airocle, we are proud to have played a role in this landmark development, one that will enhance the region’s infrastructure and shape the future of public transport in Sydney. We look forward to seeing the Parramatta Light Rail open its doors tomorrow and continue its journey as a symbol of progress and heritage in harmony.
